Mid-Month Message from CTH: Prioritizing Wellness, Community, and Equity This Summer

As summer unfolds, the Center for Transformative Health (CTH) at Texas Southern University (TSU) remains dedicated to our mission: empowering communities through health education, access, and advocacy. From honoring Juneteenth to gearing up for our July health fair, we're focused on making meaningful connections and impact in Houston—especially in the Third Ward.

🌟 1. Upcoming July Health Fair

Mark your calendars! We’re hosting a Preventative Health Screening Fair this July in partnership with Pentecostal Missionary Baptist Church and KTSU 90.9 FM. This free community event will offer essential health screenings, educational resources, and wellness engagement. Designed for families and individuals across Houston’s underserved neighborhoods, this event prioritizes prevention, education, and empowering our communities.

Vendors and health organizations are welcome—especially providers offering mammogram screenings, bone density screenings, liver ultrasounds, pulmonary lung function testing Please get in touch to secure your spot and help us spread the word.

🧠 2. Extending Mental Health Awareness Beyond June

While June is Mental Health Awareness Month, and deserves ongoing care. We continue to partner with Imago Dei Firm, who continues to offer its free metal health screenings to the community, during these months ahead. We encourage everyone to utilize the many free and low-cost mental health support options available—like community workshops, virtual therapy, hotlines, and mindfulness tools. Addressing mental health openly helps us combat stress and stigma while caring for our emotional well-being.

🌞 3. Summer Health Tips: 5 Ways to Thrive

Even as summer winds down, staying healthy is crucial. Here are five practical tips:

  1. Stay Hydrated – Keep water with you, especially outdoors.

  2. Eat Fresh – Enjoy seasonal produce like berries, greens, and melons.

  3. Move Your Body – Whether a walk, dance, or stretching, any movement counts.

  4. Be Mindful – Take intentional pauses for rest and mental clarity.

  5. Stay Informed – Learn from trusted health sources and community events (e.g., our fair!).

🌱 4. Community in Action: Gardening & Volunteerism

Our impact extends beyond words. This month, a member of our CTH team volunteered at 3rd Ward Gardens (Third Ward Multi-Service Center) and the TSU Community Farm, providing fresh produce and community engagement. These experiences highlight the power of green spaces as avenues for better nutrition and well-being.

🎆 5. Celebrating Juneteenth

We also proudly celebrated Juneteenth, reflecting on its significance as a milestone of freedom and resilience. Recognizing how historical inequities shape health outcomes is key to our shared vision of equity

-including better housing, education, and healthcare access.

✅ Staying Committed, Staying Connected

At CTH, we stay informed and responsive to emerging health issues affecting our communities. Through outreach, partnerships, research, and advocacy, we strive to uplift and empower every voice.

Stay hydrated. Stay educated. Stay engaged. Your health matters—today and always.
