Mental Health, Mindfulness, and Moving Forward Together

Mental Health Support That Meets You Where You Are

Throughout May, and continuing into the months ahead, we remain proud of our ongoing partnership with The Imago Dei Firm. This initiative continues to address the critical mental health needs of residents in the Third Ward and surrounding communities through free virtual screenings.

Each month, up to 30 participants are invited into a space where they can explore not only their mental health symptoms but also the deeper, often systemic challenges they may be facing. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all service—it’s a human-first model, offering brief interventions and direct connections to resources that can truly make a difference.

This work reflects our core belief: mental health care should be accessible, personalized, and culturally responsive. We're here to listen, to connect, and to walk alongside individuals as they navigate their path to healing.

As the month of May came to a close, The Center for Transformative Health paused to reflect on a season of growth, awareness, and empowerment. While the world began to slow down for summer, we leaned into conversations that matter—focusing on mental health, community resilience, and the power of innovative tools like artificial intelligence to improve health outcomes.

Throughout the month, our mission was simple yet urgent: to equip our community with knowledge, practical skills, and access to resources that support well-being in every sense of the word—mental, emotional, and social.

Unlocking Happiness Through Mindfulness

We kicked off the month on May 7th with “Mindfulness: Unlock Your Path to Happiness,” an engaging and practical class delivered virtually to participants eager to take a proactive step toward wellness. The session introduced mindfulness not just as a buzzword, but as a way of life—one rooted in presence, intention, and emotional clarity.

Attendees explored foundational techniques such as deep breathing, guided visualization, and body scans—accessible tools that can be integrated into even the busiest of schedules. More than just a practice for individual calm, mindfulness was framed as a bridge to greater health, more meaningful relationships, and a sense of inner peace that ripples outward into our communities.

For many participants, the class was a much-needed reminder that happiness doesn’t have to be chased; sometimes, it’s about slowing down enough to feel it.

Data, Equity, and the Future of Public Health

The following day, on May 8, we brought together students, faculty, health professionals, and community members for a groundbreaking webinar: “Leveraging AI for Health Equity Using the TSU Data Hub.” This session tackled one of the most important conversations in public health today—how we can harness data and technology to close the health equity gap.

Participants were introduced to the TSU Data Hub, a powerful platform that collects and analyzes health data through the lens of equity. This isn't just about numbers—it’s about stories, patterns, and lived experiences that can guide better interventions and smarter policies.

The discussion highlighted how artificial intelligence can uncover disparities in healthcare access and outcomes that might otherwise remain invisible. From identifying chronic illness trends in underserved areas to tailoring outreach based on cultural context, AI is becoming a key player in the fight for equitable care.

Crucially, the event emphasized community engagement as the backbone of any successful tech-driven solution. Panelists addressed real concerns—like data privacy, bias in algorithms, and the need for transparency—while outlining hopeful pathways forward through collaboration and continued research.

Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive. As one attendee, Chloe Dorsey, put it: “This is great information. I can’t wait to share with the team at the Center for Health Care Data.” And we couldn’t agree more—this work belongs to all of us.

Looking Ahead: Community Wellness in Action

As we move into summer, our commitment to wellness only deepens. We’re thrilled to announce an upcoming health fair in Sunnyside on July 26, 2025—a vibrant celebration of health, connection, and empowerment. Expect free health screenings, community resources, wellness activities, Healthy Conversations That Matter, and opportunities to meet the changemakers shaping the future of public health in Houston and beyond.

This event will reflect everything we stand for at the Center for Transformative Health: equity, collaboration, and a vision of health that includes mind, body, and community.

In Closing

May reminded us that health isn’t just the absence of illness—it’s the presence of support, awareness, and meaningful action. Whether you joined us for a mindfulness class, explored the potential of AI in public health, or received a mental health screening through our partnership with Imago Dei, know that you are part of something bigger: a community that cares.

Let’s carry that energy into the summer—and beyond.

Stay mindful. Stay connected. Stay well.
