Transforming Community Health: July 2025 Fair Recap

On Saturday, July 26th, 2025, the Texas Southern University Center for Transformative Health (CTH), in partnership with Pentecostal Missionary Baptist Church, welcomed over 250 community members for a day of wellness, screenings, education, and community connection at our Community Health Fair and “Healthy Conversations That Matter” Health Talk that followed.

This event was rooted in our mission to strengthen and enhance the conditions that promote health and overall wellbeing for diverse populations. With 34 local vendors on-site and a strong showing of community volunteers and student support, the impact of the day was both immediate and lasting.

Community Care in Action

Attendees had access to a wide variety of free health screenings and resources:

  • 68 full vitals screenings (BP, heart rate, oxygen saturation, temperature)

  • 55 blood glucose checks and 24 A1C tests

  • 24 Liver FibroScans for early liver disease detection

  • ~25–27 STD/HIV tests from Legacy and SHAPE

  • 50 boxes of Narcan (Naloxone) distributed. (This is an emergency medication administered to those experiencing opioid overdose).

  • Medication Therapy Management (MTM) and insurance information

  • 35 Advanced Practice RN consultations with 3 attendees newly diagnosed as being pre-diabetic

We also raffled off 5 blood pressure monitors, served 200 healthy lunches, and connected dozens with ongoing support services like the Houston Public Library and a local wellness center.

At 1 PM, we shifted from screenings to education with our “Healthy Conversations That Matter” health talk led by Registered Nurse Kelly Morris. The session focused on preventing and managing cardiovascular disease a leading cause of death in communities of color and brought together 29 live attendees for education and dialogue.

The community response to the events of the day was positive. See what the community is saying:
